How to Select A Charity for a Car Donation

If you are eligible to deduct your car donation for federal income tax purposes (see section on Qualifying for a Tax Deduction) and you want to claim a tax deduction, then you should make certain that the charity is a qualified organization.  The most common qualified organizations are section 501(c)(3) organizations.  Examples of 501(c)(3) organizations are charities, educational institutions, or religious organizations.  The IRS publications generally refer to these organizations as “charities”.

How to Verify that a Charity is a Qualified Organization?

To verify that an organization is a charity qualified to receive tax-deductible contributions, you can check the IRS Publication 78  - Cumulative List of Organizations.  The IRS Publication 78 is updated annually. 
IRS Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, is a list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. Note: Not all qualified organizations are listed in Publication 78 (i.e. Churches, Synagogues, Temples, and Mosques are not required to apply to the IRS for recognition of exemption in order to be qualified organizations and are frequently not listed.  If you have questions on a particular qualified organization, you can call the IRS Customer Account Services.
